Baccalaureate 2022

Baccalaureate Service - May 15 at 6:00 p.m.

Baccalaureate Service coordinated by denominations in the Santa Fe community in honor of the 2022 Graduating Class of Santa Fe School.

Service is May 15 at 6:00 p.m. and will be hosted at Santa Fe Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The entire community is invited.

History and Meaning of the Baccalaureate: A baccalaureate is a religious service to honor a graduating class. The event derives from the medieval European custom of presenting the candidates for the degree of bachelor (bacca) with laurels (lauri). It is believed to have originated at Oxford University in 1432 when each bachelor was required to deliver a sermon in Latin as part of his academic requirements. The ceremony is in celebration of, and thanksgiving for, lives dedicated to learning and wisdom. Today a baccalaureate service is held within a few days of the graduation of the honored class, usually in a house of worship. More serious than commencement, with a focus on spiritual challenge and reflection, the service is an opportunity for the community of faith to honor and bless their graduates.
